Overheating: What Your Temperature Gauge Is Telling You
A temperature gauge climbing towards the red is the most common warning that something in your cooling system is not right, and it is worth taking seriously. The usual culprits are low coolant from a leak, a failing water pump, a blocked or tired radiator core, a stuck thermostat, or a cooling fan that has stopped doing its job.
If the gauge spikes while you are driving, the safest move is to pull over, switch off, and let the engine cool before you check anything. Never open a hot cooling system, because the pressure and heat can cause serious burns. Once it has cooled you can check the coolant level in the overflow bottle and look for obvious leaks or steam.
Driving on a hot engine is what turns a small repair into a big one. A cracked head or a warped block costs far more than sorting the radiator that caused it. If your temperature gauge is not behaving, bring the vehicle in and we will pressure test the system, find the real cause, and tell you what it needs.
