Frequently asked questions
If your question is not here, call 09 636 5469 and we will talk it through.
What are the signs my cooling system needs attention?
The usual warnings are a temperature gauge creeping into the red, coolant pooling under the car, a sweet smell, steam from under the bonnet, or the level in the overflow bottle dropping. If you spot any of these, stop driving and get it looked at before the engine is damaged. Bring it in and we will pressure test the system and tell you exactly what is going on.
Can you repair my radiator, or does it have to be replaced?
More often than people expect, a radiator can be repaired rather than replaced. We assess the unit, pressure test it, and where the tanks and fittings are sound we repair leaks or recore it. We only recommend a full replacement when a repair will not give you a reliable result. That approach usually saves you money, especially on older, heavy or hard to source units.
What is recoring and when is it the right choice?
Recoring means fitting a new core to your existing radiator while keeping the original tanks, mounts and fittings. It is a cost effective option for classic cars, trucks, machinery and marine units where an off the shelf replacement either does not exist or costs far more. We build the core to suit the job so the finished unit fits and cools the way the original did.
Do you work on classic and vintage vehicles?
Yes. Classic and vintage cooling is a big part of what we do. When a modern replacement simply is not made for an older vehicle, we build or recore a radiator to match the original specification. We are happy to talk through what your car needs and what the options are before any work starts.
Do you handle heavy transport, industrial and marine cooling?
We do. Alongside cars we service radiators and heat exchangers for trucks, heavy machinery, industrial plant and generators, and marine engines. These systems run hard and the downtime is expensive, so we focus on getting them assessed, repaired and back in service without unnecessary delays.
What does a coolant flush do and how often do I need one?
Over time a cooling system fills with scale, rust and old coolant that reduces how well it moves heat. A flush clears that out and refills the system with fresh coolant so it runs at the right temperature. How often depends on the vehicle and how it is used, so ask us and we will give you a straight recommendation for your situation.
How long will a repair take?
An assessment and pressure test is usually quick, and we can talk you through what we find on the spot. A straightforward repair may be same day, while a recore or a custom build takes longer because the core is made to suit the unit. We always give you a realistic timeframe before we begin so you can plan around it.
Do you supply new and second hand radiators?
Yes. We can supply new radiators, and we also carry reconditioned and second hand stock, which is a practical option for older vehicles and tighter budgets. Give us the make, model and details of your vehicle or machine and we will let you know what we have or what we can build for you.
